We asked self-described queer baby dj @4wallzz about her practice and experience as a female hardcore dj that is always in search of the hardest and fastest tracks. She wrote to us all about her love for hyperpop, Polish gabber parties and why queer spaces are the best:
Hi, I’m Monika, I’m a queer baby dj from Poznań, Poland. I work in the sex work industry and recently got into djing which is my favourite thing to do in my free time.✨ I had bought my pioneer ddj400 in March last year and my friend showed me the basics. Since then I regulary just sit for a couple of hours on my bed, searching for tracks and trying to make something new out of them.
I’ve never had a hobby my entire life, nothing really felt passionate enough for me until I got into djing. I also really wanna try making my own music!
I’ve discovered hyperpop in 2018, there was just something about this genre that really spoke to me. I blame my love to Skrillex and kpop in primary school for that. The very queer aspect of hyperpop made me love it even more.
A year later I’ve started listening to faster and harder music and I feel like the more time passes the more I feel the need to search for even faster and even harder music.
We have some hardcore/gabber parties in Poland like Wixapol, but I really wish that this type of music was more popular among the techno clubs in general and not only the certain events.
I get an impression that techno clubs like to only book tech-house djs and are „scared” to book people who play faster music which I don’t really understand, because I think it would be a nice change to have at least one dj in the entire night who plays a little different. I really hope it will change!
If it comes to me being a female dj in a male dominated industry I don’t have any negative experiences yet (and hopefully won’t ever! but I don’t know if that’s possible) but I mostly play in queer spaces (they are the best<3) so I feel there confident and safe.
I hope that queer people and women will be more visible in the rave scene (I think we’re doing pretty well) and will feel safe to dress, dance and have fun however they want!
